Nāsadīya Sūktam - Hymn of Creation

Nāsadīya Sūktam

Then… there was neither existence nor non-existence.
There was no realm of air, no sky beyond it.
There was neither the smallest particle nor the vastest void. What then stirred? Where, and under whose will?
Was there even the deep cosmic ocean? There was no death — nor immortality.

No distinction of night or day. That One breathed, windless, by Its own power and glory —  for truly, there was nothing else apart from It. Darkness. Only darkness, wrapped in deeper darkness —
indistinguishable, formless, void.
All that existed was an unfathomable ocean of ether. From within that stillness,
a subtle impulse — ābhu, the yearning to be —
arose by Its own will.

Through the fire of energy, the One came to be. Then, desire (kāma),
the primal seed of mind, was born — the bridge between sat (Being) and asat (Non-Being).
The wise, searching within their hearts,
perceived that link, that first stirring of consciousness. From this origin, rays burst forth — flowing downward, surging upward.

From within and without, the forces that sustained the seed of creation moved in power and purpose.

But who truly knows? Who can speak with certainty of where this vast creation came from?

For even the gods are later than this beginning —
so who indeed can tell how it all arose?

And why — if at all — was this creation made?
Was it fashioned by a will, or did it simply become? That One alone —
which presides in the highest realm —
may know.
Or perhaps…
even It knows not.

This is the Nāsadīya Sūktam, (10.129) the hymn of beginnings, of meditation, and of divine doubt —
where wonder itself becomes worship.
